How to pick the perfect colour for your kitchen

Picking the right cabinet colour for you

The thing that people notice first when they walk into a kitchen is the colour of the cabinets. Only after this will they consider the style of the cabinets, or the worksurfaces and tiles. That’s why it is so important to make sure that you choose the right colour and finish that works well for you and your home. We’ve laid out some tips to help you in your decision.

Consider the overall style of your desired kitchen

If you are re-vamping your kitchen, the chances are you have a vague idea of the overall finish you are after. Are you aiming for a more traditional/country vibe? Exposed wood and earthy hues work great for this look. Or maybe you would prefer a more dramatic and modern look. Bright colours or ultra-light shades can complete a contemporary design.

Take into account the size and lighting in your kitchen

The importance of the size of your room, and the lighting available cannot be overstated. If your kitchen is on the small size, or if natural light is limited, opting for dark colours may not be the best idea. Instead, aim to lighten the space and make the kitchen more inviting. If cream, white or grey isn’t for you, light pastel colours can work great and put a modern twist on your room.

Incorporate the colour of your walls/tiles

If you have already settled on a unique wall colour, or a perfect tile design, then you will need to bear this in mind when choosing the colour of your cabinets. Don’t feel that the colours need to match perfectly, though. Opting for lighter or darker shades of the same hue can be really effective. Or go for a completely different, complementary colour to add drama.

Remember, you don’t have to pick just one colour

A trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, is mixing two cabinet colours. Think about splitting your kitchen by choosing different colours for upper and lower cabinets. Or, add a block of colour in your kitchen island to provide an attractive contrast. This idea can also work well with different materials – like gloss and timber.
