How to add personality to a minimalist kitchen

How to add Personality to a Minimalist Kitchen

The minimalist kitchen look has gained popularity over decades, and its appeal certainly shows no sign of diminishing. However, if you want to add a little personality to the room, there are a number of things you can do, which work with the minimalist backdrop to create a truly eye-catching effect. Here are some ideas to get you on your way…

Colour Contrasting Cabinets

Having all your cabinets the same colour can create a sleek and minimal effect which works really well. However, if you want to opt for a more striking option, choosing complimentary colours can really add character to your room.

Playing with the colour in your kitchen can make it more fun. Think about using contrasting, but complementary, colours for the base and lower cabinets, or for an island.

Be Brave with Colour

If you are opting for a simple design, adding a pop of colour can be extremely effective. It is easy to opt for white or grey, when you want a minimalist kitchen, but it can be fun to go for something a little different.

This can be as subtle as a pastel colour like duck-egg blue, sage green or pale pink. Alternatively, achieve a more striking look with dark blue or green – both extremely stylish and timeless.

Put Your Favourite Accessories on Display

Another effective way to add personality to your kitchen is to elect open storage options. This works great both alongside, and instead of, upper kitchen cabinets. Open shelving, or glass-front cabinets allow you to display your favourite kitchen accessories, crockery and even artwork.

Opting for shelves as opposed to upper wall cabinets can also have the added benefit of making a small space seem larger.

Unconventional Materials

Breaking up solid colour cabinets with contrasting textures can be a great way to make a space more interesting. This can be done by going for an unusual material for your worktops or splashback. Do away with conventional surfaces – concrete, plywood, and copper are great options for this. You can mix and match materials for an eclectic look or continue a single option across both the worktop and backsplash.

Statement Lighting

Although lighting in the kitchen is essential, there is no reason you can’t make it fun. Using your light fittings as a contrast to a sleek and simple kitchen design can make a room truly eye-catching. Think of the lighting as a part of the overall kitchen design, rather than afterthought.

Pendant lights are very stylish and popular, and there are so many styles to suit every taste. Or, instead opt for dramatic wall lighting or spotlights.

Eye-catching Backsplashes

Backsplashes are the best way to get creative in your kitchen. With so many options available, you can go for plain and colourful, or a monochrome pattern – and everything in between. The splashback helps to break up the space in the kitchen, as well as giving a practical surface which is easy to keep clean.

When thinking about the design of your kitchen’s backsplash, you can choose tiles – plain, patterned, or even a mixture. Other options include marble, concrete, wood, and metal.
