The Barlow In-Frame:
A Victorian Legacy, Beautifully Modernised.

A sanctuary where heritage charm meets the effortless luxury of contemporary living.

Handmade Victorian Heritage Kitchen in Sheffield

Reimagining a storied Victorian residence requires more than just design; it requires a deep reverence for the home’s original heartbeat. The Barlow In-Frame achieves this by harmonising the echoes of the past with a refined, contemporary elegance. By wrapping the cabinetry around the home’s ancestral W. Green & Co. range, Leah has crafted a space that doesn’t just house a kitchen—it celebrates a legacy.

This isn’t merely a place to prepare meals; it is an evocative retreat where history and modern luxury exist in perfect, quiet dialogue. The soft, parchment-like glow of Shaded White provides a serene backdrop for the dramatic gold-veined quartz, allowing the room’s period architecture to breathe once again. Every element, from the way the morning light catches the aged brass to the grounding presence of the heritage hearth, was curated to feel as though it has always belonged—creating a timeless sanctuary for slow mornings and a lifetime of shared stories in the heart of Sheffield.

Heritage Joinery & Architectural Engineering

Designing for a grand Victorian terrace requires a specific type of structural engineering. To respect the room’s soaring proportions, we moved away from standard dimensions to create bespoke extra-height cabinetry. These units were engineered to reach toward the original ceiling coving, ensuring the Barlow In-Frame collection feels like a permanent, structural fixture rather than an afterthought. This vertical approach not only maximises storage but also grounds the kitchen within the home’s grand 19th-century scale.

The technical blueprint was dictated by the immovable presence of the W. Green & Co. cast-iron range. Rather than attempting to modernise or remove this Sheffield icon, we utilised it as a central heritage anchor, framing it with a custom-built mantle and solid oak shelf. By meticulously scribe-fitting the cabinetry to the property’s original alcoves and quirks, Leah was able to hide the complexities of modern living—including the secret LED-lit pantry—within a layout that honours the building’s history. The result is a seamless marriage of heritage preservation and high-end joinery that feels entirely intentional.

The Vision Behind the Project

Meet Leah, Designer at DKD Sheffield

With this project, my priority was to ensure the new kitchen didn’t try to outshine the home’s history. The W. Green range is a powerful piece of Sheffield’s industrial soul; it demanded a design that felt equally permanent and respected. By using the Barlow In-frame in Shaded White, we were able to ‘lift’ the room, allowing the light to play off the Calacatta Quartz while the extra-height cabinetry honours the original Victorian scale. It’s a space that doesn’t feel ‘installed’—it feels like it has finally come home.
